The goal of Broadway Bound Youth Theatre Foundation artistic director Lynne Broyles has always been to share her passion for musical theatre with children and teens so that they, in turn, can continue this creative tradition as teachers, performers and art patrons for generations to come.
BBYT Foundation hopes to engage public audiences in the wonder of theatre, and more importantly, intrigue and delight student audiences, perhaps inspiring further participation in theatre or an allied art. BBYT believes that education in the theatrical arts gives children the skills needed to communicate effectively and helps develop the tools necessary to be a proactive member of the community.
To do this, students receive training in vocals, acting and choreography. They learn how to interpret the text of a play and make it their own. They learn that even the smallest part is important. They learn to take a character and make it their own. Along the way, they not only gain skills, but longlasting friendships.
As a non-profit 501(c) 3 foundation, BBYT believes that education in the theatrical arts gives students the skills needed to communicate effectively and helps develop the tools necessary to be a proactive member of the community no matter the chosen career path.
Mission Statement
The mission of Broadway Bound Youth Theatre Foundation is twofold:
• To teach the craft of musical theatre to the youth of San Diego in a nurturing setting that encourages confidence-building, teamwork, performance skills and a sense of pride in a quality finished product.
• To engage public audiences in the wonder of theatre, and more importantly, intrigue and delight student audiences, perhaps inspiring further participation in theatre or an allied art.
Artistic Team
LYNNE BROYLES – PRESIDENT/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR:
Lynne is a very proud mother of 18 month old active twins. Before becoming a mother, Lynne studied voice with Dietrich Erbelding (San Francisco Opera) and Coni Lisec (North Bay Opera) and studied tap, jazz and ballet dance with Mason-Kahn Studio in San Francisco. She has participated in community and professional musical theatre starring as the leading roles in: "Peter Pan," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Kiss Me Kate," "Cabaret," "Candide," "Hello Dolly," "Gigi," "The Sound of Music," "The Good Doctor," "Annie," "Into the Woods," "Company," "Singing in the Rain," "How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" and many more. For her participation in the arts, Lynne has received many awards. Her favorites include: Who’s Who in Music in her junior year of high school for her classical solo performances and The Arty Award (San Francisco’s Emmy Award) for her role as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret." She has held the following titles for her academic/talents “Ideal Miss,” “California Miss,” “Our Little Miss,” “Junior Miss,” pageants. Lynne was presented the "Outstanding Achievement Award" in the arts for her contribution to the arts in Northern California during 1978 - 1989. This is one of her most cherished honors.
Although Lynne spent many years performing, her first love is teaching and directing children. This remains her greatest passion. Lynne currently teaches singing and acting lessons both privately and in groups at Bertrand’s Music in Rancho Penasquitos. She has been teaching for over 20 years and is proud to say that many of her students have been very successful. These successes include: Marcella Brandanine (Young Cosette) in the touring company of "Les Miserables," Courtney Draper the star of Disney’s "The Jersey," Disney Movies “The Duke,” “The Thirteenth Year,” “Stepsister from Planet Weird,” as well as ABC’s "The Days" (Emma) and "The Bold and The Beautiful;" Heather Paige Kent was cast in "That’s Life," "Stark Raving Mad," "The Norms Show" and "Married With Children." Sarah Pence was in the 2005 cast of “How the Grinch Stole Christamas” at the Old Globe Theater. Most recently, former student Adam Lambert was cast as Fiero in "Wicked." And, just this month, Lynne proudly announces more success for her students. Jacob Hays was just cast on Disney’s "Really Short Report" and AJ Ditty just received a role as young Farnsworth in Aaron Sorkin’s (writer of "A Few Good Men") new play "The Farnsworth Invention" at The La Jolla Playhouse. What a very exciting moment for AJ to audition for Aaron Sorkin himself –- it is a dream come true and a great honor when an actor gets to audition for the writer of the play!
Though Lynne is a professional singer/actress/dancer who performed on stage and television in San Francisco, Los Angeles and the East Coast, she now makes San Diego her home. She no longer performs (with the exception of taking the stage as Miss Hannigan at times), but she feels it very necessary to maintain her ties to those she knows in the entertainment business. She has an established working relationship with Joey Paul Jenson casting director for Disney, Universal Studios and Tri-Star/Columbia Pictures. In maintaining this relationship she is able to conduct professional acting workshops in San Diego which gives her students exposure to the television and motion picture world of entertainment. She is proud to say that two of her students were scouted from a workshop and were featured on cartoon voices on "Hey Arnold." Also, Lynne also retains ties to talent agencies in San Diego, Los Angeles and New York for the actors aspiring to make it on stage, television or commercials.
Lynne has produced and directed over 100 musical production, plays and revues. Just a few of her favorites include: "Annie," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Bugsy Malone," "Grease," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Bye Bye Birdie," "Les Miserables," "Into The Woods," "School House Rock," "Oliver," "Peter Pan," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Wiz," "Alice In Wonderland," and "Pinocchino."
CATHY PENCE – ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR:
Cathy Pence began singing with her two sisters in her father's church when she was 5 years old. She continued singing in various Christian venues through her teen years. Cathy became involved in children's theater in 1998 when her three children began acting in local productions. She has experienced almost every behind-the-scenes task from dressing room mom to show secretary to back stage crew to microphone manager. She has been the Rehearsal Assistant for two BBYT productions and most recently took the reins for the first time as an Associate Director for the first Carmel Valley BBYT production of Annie.
Cathy's voice and acting ability have brought her in front of the curtain as well. Her roles include Miss Hannigan in "Annie"; Evilene in "Wiz"; Mother Abess in "Sound of Music"; Widow Douglas in "Big River"; and Mrs McAfee in "Bye Bye Birdie". When not donning greasepaint or sitting in a directors chair, Cathy is the Project Manager of the Campus Planning Department at Sharp Memorial Hospital. In her spare time, she is part of the Worship Team at Maranatha Chapel, and the treasurer of her daughters Girl Scout Troop.
SYDNEY CIRCLE – MUSICAL DIRECTOR:
Sydney Circle has worked as musical director and accompanist with several youth musical theatre groups over the past years, including Valley Center High School, Arts off Broadway, and The Classical Academy. She appreciated the opportunity to be a portion of the work with the wonderful group of students and directors involved in this production of Grease. Mrs. Circle received her BA in piano performance from UCLA where she studied with Aube Tzerko and Johana Harris. She also studied piano and harpsichord locally with James Weld. In addition to musical theatre, Mrs. Circle also works accompanying choirs and soloists, and has taught piano and musical theory privately and as a community college class.
